Located on 6 acres in rural Victoria, Macedon House was an existing ‘house and land package’ home in need of a complete interior and exterior refurbishment. Generic in form and aesthetic, and constructed by a previous owner, the home required a comprehensive refurbishment to lift the property to a new standard of finish and elegance. With the client based in Melbourne and using the house a weekend retreat, the need for a space to unwind, relax and entertain became integral to the design concept.
Taking reference from the country setting, a holistic language was achieved throughout the home through a considered palette of materials and finishes. Externally, polished concrete was applied over the existing walls to provide a simple and neutral backdrop to the established garden. Whilst a weathered timber pergola was erected to the northern side, providing a contrasting texture to the rendered walls. Dark, hand-scraped American oak flooring and grey walls were applied throughout the interior, setting a moody atmosphere that flows from room to room. A further softness and rural integrity was created through the joinery details, with a custom v-groove lining applied to the kitchen, laundry and wardrobes. Whilst hand-glazed tiles were selected for each bathroom to enhance the artisan ‘imperfect’ feel of the home.
